Thanks for visiting our site. The Karmann Group decided to create a blog to initiate a discussion forum specifically dedicated to document management systems (DMS) and their deployments. Our decision is based, at least in part, on a feeling that too much time is spent on the systems and features and not enough on the implementation and human factors.

We believe that the gains in employee productivity that are possible by deploying a document management system should provoke every company to deploy a system. But there are factors well beyond productivity that should be considered. What would the impact on our collective cities carbon footprint be if 10%, 15%, 20% of our workforce did not get into a car, or for that matter any other form of transportation, every day? How much less congestion would Los Angles, California experience if another 10% of the southern California population worked from home? Having employees telecommute and everything that that implies is but one additional benefit of a properly deployed document management system.

A few of the other topics that we will examine are:

Information Management and Data Security

SaaS vs. Locally Installed Software

Systems & Features

Although we work in this arena daily, we do not presume to have all of the answers. We welcome comment, discussion and feedback.

We hope that you find something of value and return often.

Thanks again for visiting.

Let us start by saying clearly that we are not anti-technology. Far from it; taking your office virtual depends on technology. In some cases a lot of it. But technology for technology’s sake is a waste of time, a waste of money, and in many situations it can become an anchor, an actual impediment to getting away from an office and becoming a virtual worker.

Many of us have our hobbies and most of those hobbies involve tools. It is far too easy to get caught up in the constant need for the latest and greatest gadget. The problem is, and we all know it, that the latest tool rarely makes us a better woodworker or dressmaker. What it does do is clutter up our toolbox, cost us more money and often times slow us down. The objective is getting the job done and done well not having the best toolbox on the block.

This can become a real problem when we consider taking our “office” out of the office. Excess boxes of the latest hardware and software will usually slow us down. They will make it harder for us to pack, unpack, setup and close down. All of the excess will bog you down regardless of what you are doing and where you are going and being bogged down is exactly the problem that we are trying to correct. Do you really want to get out of the office only to be stuck somewhere else.

The message is go light, go simple, but go and the lighter and simpler you keep it the sooner you will be able to go and the easier it will be.

As move forward and discuss various components of the technology world the idea is that you don’t need to get it all. Quite the contrary, we would suggest that you keep your toolkit pared down to the basics. Not every new toy, but rather what you actually need to get the job done. In the end you will be happier and probably more productive.

So, please forgive us for not jumping directly into the latest and greatest stuff. We just wanted to set the record straight. It isn’t about the latest stuff, except to the extent that it allows you to go virtual easier and faster. What it is about actually taking your Office Virtual.

Thanks for stopping by. We hope that you find some value here and visit again.
